A tall, hearty native biennial, the Evening Primrose plant is abundant in many parts of the world. Native Americans first used the plant, often for upset stomach or respiratory infections. They introduced it to European immigrants who took it back to England and Germany.

The main medicinal components are extracted from the seeds in the form of an oil which contains essential fatty acids including high amounts of gamma linoleic acid (GLA). GLA is an essential fatty acid and is used by the body to produce prostaglandins. During premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or menopause, these hormone-like substances may be out of balance. GLA is helpful for relieving PMS, regulating the menstrual cycle and easing hot flashes and mood swings often associated with menopause.
